Hardware Sizing For Your ERP Project

You'll spend a lot of time on your ERP project looking at software.

But the hardware component of an ERP project is the framework the software lives on. Get the hardware right, you'll get the most from your software.

Hardware Sizing Basics

Your business is different from everyone else's. The combination of your company size, your current business activities and your plans for the future make your needs unique.

The first things you need to consider are:

  • What other systems or software does the ERP software have to talk to? This is often overlooked and not accounted for very well if you just do a sizing for a single application.
  • What are your growth needs? Your future plans might mean that a scale up or scale out architecture better suits your needs.
    • Is your company growing?
    • Will you be adding modules or other applications in the future?
    • Will you need to customise your ERP software?
  • Do you know the number of users of the system?
  • Do you know the likely average and peak transaction volumes? The sizing may not always be performed using transaction, or business volumes, but it helps by providing another validaton point, something to compare against.

Sizing For Failure and Daily Use

This next layer of sizing factors in how you want your system to behave on a daily basis and what happens when things go wrong:

  • Availability requirements
    • In the event of a failure, do you want to run in a degraded mode?
    • During a failure, how much of your workload needs to run: just production, or also some non-production?
  • Non-production environments – Usually the focus of sizing is on what's required for your production system, but your non-production environments are often more difficult to size.
    • How much of the production data will be duplicated?
    • Will there be subsets or full copies?
    • How critical is the response time and performance for non-production users?
    • Are they doing scaling or performance testing?
  • Storage performance
    • Capacity requirements are important, but people often don't pay enough attention to the actual I/O requirements.
    • Size your hardware with a high performing storage system from the beginning.

Hardware Sizing Checklist

You want to make sure you've got everything covered. Here's a list of hardware-level items to consider:

  • The size of your business needs to be factored in (small, medium or large).
  • Check the specifications of your ERP software – what are their recommendations for hardware size and requirements to run their software?
  • Size your hardware by way of processor power needed.
  • What is the main memory size?
  • What are your disk space requirements?
  • What about disk speeds?
  • What are the High Availability measures for the processor?
  • Have you factored in memory, disk and network bandwidth requirements?
